Which is better? It doesn’t matter. There, I’ve said it.
But the truth is, it’s personal and that’s why it does matter. Confused? Why do you think I put Nikon vs. Canon as the title instead of the other way around?
You guessed it…I’m a Nikon user.
Brand A vs. Brand B
This debate rings throughout the halls of photography forums on a daily basis. It never ends. It’s no different than the PC vs. Mac wars or Ford vs. Chevy. Of course the occasional Pentax, Linux, or Dodge owner weighs in from time to time. But no one really cares about them. They’re just window dressing.
Consumers are fickle beasts, but most will stand by their choice to the death. Brand choice is so powerful in fact, it’s often passed along to our children. Ask any mom what brand of chocolate chips they use in their cookies, and why. Most will answer, ” Because that’s what my mom used.”
These debates are not so much about features or price, they’re about the personal choices we’ve made and why we stand by them. That’s why these brands are often number one and number two: Loyalty.
Don’t Ask
If you’re finding this website after doing a Google search for Nikon vs. Canon, and you’ve made it this far, I have some advice for you. It’s the best advice you’ll ever hear on this subject. Don’t ask which brand is better.
Just don’t do it, especially on an internet forum. The responses will induce a period of anarchy, and you will be more confused than ever.

Instead, go to a camera store and try them for yourself. By camera store, I don’t mean Wal Mart, Best Buy, or Radio Shack. I mean a camera store. If you walk in and they sell anything else but photography gear, turn right around and walk back out. Don’t waste your time.
But Wal Mart is cheaper!
I firmly believe that Wal Mart will be the end of all mankind, but that’s a topic for another day. Glenda, the night shift electronics supervisor who just came off a 10 hour shift at her day job, is used to unlocking the Xbox game cabinet and doesn’t know squat about digital cameras.
Don’t let the nifty blue vest throw you for a loop.
Real photographers work at dedicated camera stores. They can help you make the right choice…for you. And trust me when I say this, you will know with about 90% certainty which one you will buy within 10 seconds of merely picking up a Nikon or a Canon. One of them will just feel right.
No really. Which is better?
Nikon. Hey, you asked.
Seriously though, they are both excellent platforms. Both companies have been making quality optics since the early 1900′s. You can’t go wrong with either.
Each brand has their perks and quirks, but when comparing cameras in the same price class, they really are about the same…only Nikon is better.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
