For the Fallen

by Anthony Hereld on September 3, 2010

Post image for For the Fallen

Although this is a very recent image, it’s already a personal favorite.

Opportunities to photograph something truly amazing don’t come along very often.  Birds are a dime a dozen.  Old barns can be found just about anywhere on the planet.  But a traveling memorial dedicated to fallen heroes is a very rare find.

The Wall

This is part of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) which features a downsized replica of the Vietnam War Memorial, a 9/11 tribute, and many other displays.

The wall was escorted to Sidney, OH from Wapak, OH by an estimated 2,300 motorcycle riders earlier this week.  It is now located at Custenborder Field on State Route 47, just inside the Sidney city limits.

If you’re reading this and are in the area, make a point to visit this weekend.  Take your kids.  Things like this are important, because the memories of these brave soldiers would be lost without anyone to tell their stories.

About this photo

There’s very little to say about how to interpret this photo.  It’s all self-explanatory.  This photograph was converted to black and white because it makes a much bigger statement than it ever could in color.

I focused on the Purple Heart medal, and wanted to give the impression of names on the wall without them being visible.  I felt that by only showing a few names, it would diminish the value of the many others who gave their lives for freedom.

The cause

I’ve always wanted to contribute something worthwhile to a great cause for our military.  I have contacted AVTT with the hopes that they will accept my gift of this photograph.

It is my wish for them to create prints and sell them wherever the wall travels, with proceeds benefiting their foundation and the memories of the soldiers that they honor.
