For the Fallen

Although this is a very recent image, it’s already a personal favorite.

Opportunities to photograph something truly amazing don’t come along very often.  Birds are a dime a dozen.  Old barns can be found just about anywhere on the planet.  But a traveling memorial dedicated to fallen heroes is a very rare find.

And the Winner is…

Yours truly!

I entered this image at Nikonites, for their first ever photo contest.  The contest theme was “hot”, so I thought this seemed appropriate.

The above photograph is of my daughter, taken at the Ohio State Fair this year.  Temperatures rose into the upper 90′s, making it a very hot and humid day.  This was one of several Cool Zones set up to help patrons fight the heat.

Bigger is Better

I made a formatting change to the site today so that I can show larger photographs. My images are hosted over at Flickr, and since they now support 640 pixel previews, I figured now would be a good time to take advantage of the 30% larger size. Enjoy!

First HDR…Sort of

This isn’t technically an HDR image…just heavily edited in Photoshop to appear that way.  I don’t have any HDR software yet, though I have had my eye on Photomatix Pro for quite some time. Right now an extra $119 is hard to come by. For you city slickers, this is a photograph of a grain [...]

Little Shack on the Prairie

I’m not a fan of country living, which is unfortunately where I find myself at the moment. “Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name” was a line in the Cheers theme song long ago…makes me wonder if the guy who wrote that ever lived in a small town. I guess I’ll always be [...]

Inspirations: Bruce Gilden

Thumbnail image for Inspirations: Bruce Gilden

Most street photographers I’ve seen in action simply blend in with the backdrop.  They’re wallflowers.  You probably don’t even know they’re out there. Bruce Gilden is not a wallflower.  He’s a glass of ice water thrown in your face while you’re sleeping. And that’s precisely his point, we’re all sleeping.  Bruce Gilden is our wake-up [...]

Nikon vs. Canon

Which is better?  It doesn’t matter.  There, I’ve said it. But the truth is, it’s personal and that’s why it does matter.  Confused?  Why do you think I put Nikon vs. Canon as the title instead of the other way around? You guessed it…I’m a Nikon user.

Black & White Harley

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again:  there’s just something special about black and white photography.  It’s classic and timeless.  The above shot could have been taken in the 1960′s or yesterday. B&W conversion has become part of my normal workflow.  I almost always check to see if a photo looks as good [...]

All That Jazz

This past weekend was the annual Jazz & Rib Fest in downtown Columbus. Lots of people, lots of ribs, and of course…lots of jazz.  Above is Mary McClendon, a local jazz scat singer.  She was awesome! I wouldn’t label myself as a jazz fan on a normal basis, but there were definitely some cool sounds [...]

A Day at the Fair

Thumbnail image for A Day at the Fair

Summertime is county fair season here in Ohio. It’s when folks who live a simpler life come out to compete and show off their pigs, sheep, rabbits, and abilities as horse trainers.  There’s almost always motocross races and demolition derbies too. I visited the Franklin County Fair yesterday to photograph some friends who were racing [...]
